Joyce Cherono Laboso

Joyce Laboso started her professional career as a High school teacher at Kipsigis Girls High school between 1985 and 1989. She was Head of the French Department through out her time at Kipsigis Girls entailing various leadership responsibilities.

In 1990, she was employed as an Assistant Lecturer at Egerton University. She was then promoted to Lecturer in 1991 at the same institution. With the promotion, came additional responsibilities of academic and administrative nature. These and other responsibilities help shape who she is today. Another promotion in the shape of Assistant Deanship at the Dean of Students office came in 2001 where she stayed till 2002. Her stint in that office giving her additional leadership experience.

In 2003 a Special Needs Lecturer job at Farrow House Education Centre, Hull, UK came knocking at her door. Here she was tasked with teaching and assessing pupils with special needs, design programmes to address pupils’ emotional and behavioural difficulties and liaise with service providers for apprenticeship and work placement.

Between 2007 and 2008, she went back to Egerton University as Coordinator, Communication & Media, Communication Skills, Library & Information Studies Programmes, Department of Language & Linguistics.

As of September 2008 to date, she is an elected Member of Parliament representing Sotik Constituency in the August House. She Vice-Chairs the Committee on Implementation and is on the Departmental Committee on Education, Research and Technology. From August 2010 - 2012, she was a Member of the Speakers Panel of the Kenya National Assembly. As of March 2013, Joyce Cherono Laboso became the first female Deputy Speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly. She holds this office to date with her term due to end in 2017. In the 11th parliament Dr. Laboso chairs the Liaison Committee in the National Assembly which is comprised of the chairpersons of all committees in Parliament. From 2013 - 2014, Hon. Dr. Laboso became the first African woman to hold the position of Co-President of the African Caribbean and Pacific – European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly. According to the standing orders, Hon. Laboso chairs the House Business committee in place of the Speaker during his absence and is also the Vice-Chair of the Procedure and House Rules committee that is in charge of the rules of procedure that is, the Standing Orders used in the House.
