Joyce Cherono Laboso

Joyce Laboso went to Molo Primary School for her primary education. Afterwards she joined Kenya High School in Nairobi, one of the most prestigious high schools in Kenya, for her Secondary education. This is where she fell in love with the arts, languages in particular. During her A-levels, she had made up her mind in pursuing the arts as portrayed by her subject selection; French, Literature and History.

Between 1980 and 1983 she was an undergraduate Student of Kenyatta University pursuing a degree in B. Ed (arts) in French, Literature and Education where she graduated with honors(2nd Class Hons Upper Division). Between 1984 and 1985, Joyce Laboso did a Postgraduate Diploma in teaching French Language at the University of Paul Valery in France. From time to time, she has also attended refresher courses for French teachers in France.

Between 1989 and 1991, she proceeded to do a Masters in Teaching English as a Foreign Language(T.E.F.L) at the University of Reading in the UK. Dissertation: ‘Judgemental and Introspection Approaches to Content Validation: Study using the Kenyan Communication Skills Test’ Unpublished MA dissertation, University of Reading (U.K)

Between 2002 and 2006, she pursued her studies at the University of Hull in the UK, undertaking a PhD in Gender and Language Education. Her thesis was on Boys’ Underachievement in English Language Education in Kenyan Secondary Schools: The Influence of Attitude and Gendered Interest Registered in Egerton University, Kenya but completed under a Commonwealth Split-Site scholarship in University of Hull, UK.
